Kevin Sherin, MD, MPH
Dr. Sherin joined the State of Florida Department of Health as Orange County Director in 2004. He is a family physician who has previous experience as Health Officer and Director of four local health departments in Florida and Illinois between 1988 and 1994. He previously has served on the Illinois Board of Health. He was Program Director of the University of Illinois Family Medicine Residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center in the Chicago area before returning to Florida.
Dr. Sherin graduated from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine, MD; University of Illinois, Chicago, MPH; American College of Physician Executives, CPE; He received a BA with Honors from the University of Notre Dame.
He was elected President-Elect of the American Association of Public Health Physicians at the June 2006 Meeting. The AAPHP is a specialty society for Public Health physicians recognized by the AMA which serves federal, state and local physicians involved in Public Health. He currently also serves as Vice President of the Orange County Medical Society. He was named to Castle and Connelly’s List of Top Family Doctors in Chicago in 2002.
In 2008 Dr. Sherin was appointed Associate Professor of Family Medicine in the Department of Medical Education at University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine. He has recently been named as a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International in Orlando. He is an active volunteer with Shepherd’s Hope, Homeless Connect, and other medical facilities in the Orange County Community.
Dr. Sherin has served on the boards of local and national Public Health and Family Practice Organizations. He participated as a scholar of the CDC’S Public Health Leadership Institute 1991-1992. He remains a community involved Public Health and political policy advocate.
Dr. Sherin has authored and co-authored numerous articles in Public Health and Family Practice Journals. His most recent includes a national publication on Prostate Cancer Screening which will be the Feb. 2008 issue of Journal of American College of Preventive Medicine. He was also recently featured in Florida Doctor Magazine, and has been a link to the community through local and national television media where he has provided vital health information on issues such as Amoeba and MRSA as well as Disaster Preparedness.
As Director of Orange County which has of the largest health departments in Florida, he has been instrumental in improving Minority Health Outreach, and Public Health Awareness. Other responsibilities of Orange County Health Department include: Climate Change Initiatives where he serves on statewide committees with local governments; Quality Management, positioning Public Health services for 21st Century, improved access to Community Health Services, and development of countywide partnerships and collaboratives for an improved overall Public Health System.
He supervises an annual budget of $35Million, and manages a staff of over 500 individuals in various departments which include: Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Women Infant and Children (WIC), Immunizations, School Health, HIV, STD, TB Control, Women’s Health, Vital Records, PIO Information Office, Office of Minority Health and Health Education.
Orange County’ population includes 1.2 Million residents and a tourism population of more than 51 Million annually.
Dr. Sherin’s interests include: Languages, Parenting, Church and Community service, Reading and Sports. He resides in Orlando with his wife, Gail, son, Daniel and daughters, Grace and Jennifer. His youngest daughter, Jennifer, was adopted from China.
